Accessible Urban Farming

Spring 2026: Monday, 1:30 PM to 4:15 PM
Walton Center for Planetary Health, WCPH 409 (Session C)

What is a food community and who is part of it?

—————————————————————

What are some barriers to being actively engaged in a local food community?

—————————————————————

How can we build accessible food communities from the ground up?

—————————————————————

How can urban farms support healthy food communities for everyone?

—————————————————————

Walking the talk: how can multigenerational communities support cultural understandings and practices that contribute to a healthier, more sustainable and accessible food systems?

How can improving accessibility and equity in local food systems — through urban farming, school gardens, and community farms — transform the health, sustainability, and quality of life for communities?

Investigate issues of accessibility, equity and access within local food communities, urban farming, and school gardens. Experience the value of being connected to nonhuman life. Discover how (non)access to healthy, fresh and local food impacts the quality of life for yourselves and the broader community. Volunteer at a local urban farm; learn first-hand how farmers' work and values contribute to a community's access to fresh, local and healthy food. Through field trips and experiential learning, students will evaluate accessibility and will create projects to increase awareness and inclusion.

Honors students will receive HON credit for this course. CIVI general studies credit.

Seize the Moment

This Lab is presented through Seize the Moment, an initiative of Leonardo, the Humanities Lab, and the Global Futures Laboratory at Arizona State University. In an alarming syndemic of intersecting crises—the coronavirus pandemic, racial injustice and accompanying civil unrest, and cascading environmental hazards—Seize the Moment addresses the grand challenges of the day through transdisciplinary arts, science, technological, and humanities collaborations in research, pedagogy, and public engagement.
