Printing el Pueblo: A Recovery

Spring 2025: Thursday, 10:30 am - 1:15 pm

Interdisciplinary A202 (Session C)

What is the function of art in the Chicano community from the Chicano Movement through today?

—————————————————————

What complexities does the term Chicano encompass? How have artists grappled with that through time and continue to grapple with that today?

—————————————————————

How does Chicano Art demand greater representation for the Chicano community both within the art world as well as U.S society broadly construed?

—————————————————————

What is the relationship between Chicano art and Latinx art? Where do they share concerns and where do their concerns differ?

—————————————————————

What is the relationship between art and politics for the Chicano community?

What are the heterogeneous concerns of the Chicano community and how are they reflected in the artwork that community has produced over time?

In this course, students, faculty, and curators will collaboratively investigate the key questions listed above in the context of the ASU Art Museum’s exhibition of the ASU Hispanic Research Center’s Chicano Art Collection. Students will engage with thematic issues such as: the political and cultural responses of Chicanos to the dominant American culture, the dialogue between Chicano, Mexican, and Latinx art, and the contributions of Chicana/o artists to American visual culture. Students will learn to critically interpret and analyze texts and visual works in aesthetic, cultural, economic, historical, and social contexts and present their work in both written and verbal forms.
