Only English?

Fall 2020: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:30-11:45 am
ASU Sync

Does multilingualism matter?

—————————————————————

Wouldn’t things be easier if we all spoke the same language?

—————————————————————

What are language policies like in other countries? What can we learn from them?

—————————————————————

What is the relationship between culture and language?

—————————————————————

Given the widespread attitude that everyone speaks English, is there a need to maintain other languages?

This Lab will investigate these questions through workshops, hands-on activities and conducting interviews about something everyone has: language. These human language stories will also drive our action. Based on our investigations, students will collaborate to generate new strategies that address the challenges of language use by potentially creating advertising campaigns that will influence political representatives, university administrators, and the general public.

Collaborations

  • Librarians, educators, language lobbyists, and representatives of heritage communities will have guest appearances in the lab. Students will collect language stories from a range of community members at ASU and beyond.

Impact Outcomes

Students will share their findings with the general public in a format of their choosing. Examples for that outcome include: proposal to AZ political representatives or ASU administration, op-ed article in the Washington Post, or a training manual for cross-cultural sensitivity in educational, workplace, or community settings. View their final impact outcomes here.

Multilingualism in the News

At the Humanities Lab, we strive to ensure our Labs are relevant and current. Here is a recent article about English language abroad in today’s news!
